Cary, NC (September 12, 2021) – The North Carolina Courage have partnered with A Place at the Table as part of the NWSL’s Nationwide Community Impact Program, the club announced today.
This league-wide initiative features a community-focused platform recognizing and promoting each club’s local community partner, team ambassador, and service project. A Place at the Table, along with all community partners from across the league, will receive a $2,500 grant on behalf of Nationwide and the league to support its program and serve as the focus of a team-led service project, with a designated player ambassador to champion the effort. NC Courage forward, Jessica McDonald, has been named this year’s community ambassador for the club.
"Community means everything to me,” Courage forward and Community Ambassador Jessica McDonald said. “I'm able to bring friends and family to A Place at the Table to have a great meal, and it’s a place that I recommend to others to visit. A Place at the Table brings so many different people together, it’s such a very diverse place and it’s just very comforting to know that A Place at the Table exists here in Raleigh, where everyone can feel welcome.”
A Place at the Table is Raleigh’s first pay-what-you-can café with a mission of providing quality food and community relationships, regardless of financial means. At the café, customers have the option to pay the suggested price, pay at least $3 for their meal or volunteer in exchange for their meal. The café also provides customers the opportunity to “Pay it Forward” by contributing to another person’s meal or purchasing a $10 token to hand out in the community. Executive Director Maggie Kane founded A Place at the Table in 2015 and went on to open the Raleigh location in January of 2018 with a mission of providing an inclusive space and accessibility to food for all those in the community.
"We are so excited to partner with the Courage and excited to have the team with us at A Place at the Table, Raleigh’s pay-what-you-can cafe in downtown Raleigh!” Executive Director Maggie Kane said. “Not only will they be eating some awesome food with us, but they’ll be helping us fulfill our mission of providing community and good food for all, regardless of means!"
At the end of the season, one team-community partnership will be selected as the winner of the Nationwide Community Impact Award and their collective efforts will be honored during the 2021 NWSL Championship weekend in November. The winning community partner will receive a $20,000 donation from Nationwide to further the efforts of their program.
