We’re back with another edition of 5 in 5, where we ask your favorite North Carolina Courage players five questions in five minutes, plus it only takes you five minutes to read! This week’s 5 in 5 is with NC Courage captain and defender, Abby Erceg. Erceg is the team captain for your NC Courage as well as the anchor of the Courage defense. Erceg has played professionally in countries such as Germany and Australia but she has spent her last 3 seasons in the NWSL. She currently holds the New Zealand record for most international caps by a men’s or women’s soccer player with 130 caps during her 11-year career.
What are the biggest differences you’ve noticed between American soccer and soccer in the other countries you played in?
“Here they’re really athletic, fast, and strong. It’s all about what you can do with your body more or less. When you’re in Germany or Japan it’s all technical. It’s what you can do with the ball and how you can move the ball. It’s very technical and they can get away with a lot of things just because of that technique. “
What do you miss the most about New Zealand?
“I miss the water. A beach is within 20 minutes of anywhere you go in New Zealand. That’s usually where I go to relax and hang out with friends. Definitely the place I miss the most. “
What are your thoughts on living in NC so far?
“It’s nice. The weather is really hot. I think it’s getting a little bit too hot for my comfort level, but I enjoy it. It’s a lot of greenery and it reminds me of New Zealand a little bit. It’s not too far from the water so when I do want to get away I can just drive for a few hours and get out there. “
What is your favorite book?
“My favorite book is The Century Trilogy by Ken Follett. It’s about how he builds cathedrals and stuff like that. He’s a great writer and I could read his books all day. “
If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring 3 things, what would you choose to bring and why?
“I’ve gone through this a lot with my friends. I’d have to bring: 1. Something to make a fire with for food 2. A portable shower to stay clean 3. A knife to keep it practical Be sure to catch Erceg and her first-place North Carolina Courage as they return to Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday, June 17th at 7:30 p.m. to take on the Boston Breakers.
