An NC Courage fan’s guide to the gold medal match

North Carolina Courage fans will see no shortage of familiar faces when the United States and Brazil battle for the women’s soccer gold medal at the Paris Olympics on Saturday, with plenty of current and former Courage players taking the field at the Parc des Princes. The match kicks off at 11 a.m. ET and fans can join the Courage at Tobacco Wood Brewing for a watch party. Casey Murphy and Kerolin Nicoli are the obvious connections of current players, with the duo guaranteeing both the gold and silver medal coming home to Courage Country. It will mark the first time a Courage active player has brought home a gold or silver medal from the Olympics. Kerolin is back on the field for the first time since her injury last October, playing in every match for Brazil during the tournament. The reining NWSL MVP’s ice-cold nutmeg finish sealed Brazil’s semifinal win over FIFA No. 1 Spain on Tuesday. Her first action of 2024 has fans excited to see her back in a Courage jersey when the regular season returns at the end of the month. Murphy has been one of the best goalkeepers in the NWSL since joining the club via a trade in 2020, breaking the Courage’s regular season wins record earlier this season and becoming the youngest goalkeeper in league history to record 30 clean sheets last season. Now, the 28-year-old has a chance to help the United States bring home a gold medal in her first Olympic Games. Former NC Courage players have also made a major impact for the USWNT at the tournament. Crystal Dunn, who was traded to Seattle for Murphy, suited up for the Courage from 2018-2020 and helped lead the team to multiple NWSL Shields and Championships. Across her two full seasons, Dunn made 35 regular season appearances, scoring 15 goals and adding nine assists, while being named to the NWSL Best XI First Team in 2018 and Second Team in 2019. Another mainstay of those championship teams, Lynn Williams, has also played an important role off the bench for the U.S. this tournament. Williams moved with the Courage to Cary from the Western New York Flash in 2017 and helped the team to three NWSL Shields and two NWSL Championships in five years. The forward scored 42 goals and added 17 assists in 81 appearances. Williams’ 48 goals in all competitions are the second most by any player in team history. Emily Fox spent one season with the Courage, making 18 regular season appearances in 2023. Both Fox and Dunn had successful college careers in the Triangle, suiting up for the UNC Tar Heels. Dunn led the Tar Heels to the 2012 National Championship, winning the Hermann Trophy that season as well. While the gold and silver are already guaranteed, Courage Country has a chance at a clean sweep of the podium if Feli Rauch and Germany can take down Spain in the bronze medal match on Friday. Rauch started the tournament as an alternate but was elevated mid tournament and has played crucial minutes for the Germans in the knockout stages. Rauch was recently featured in Beats & Rhymes FC, discussing her move to the Courage, love of music and the Olympics. Courage Country was well represented throughout the tournament, with fans getting a good look at new signing Cortnee Vine while she played for Australia. Sydney Collins was also originally named to the Canada roster but was forced to withdraw from the tournament after suffering an injury in a training match during the lead up to the Games.
