LYNN WILLIAMS VOTED NWSL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CHICAGO (Aug. 7, 2018) – North Carolina Courage forward Lynn Williams was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the NWSL Media Association for Week 19 of the 2018 NWSL season.

Williams, 25, helped the Courage capture the 2018 NWSL Shield on Sunday night with a 2-1 win over Portland Thorns FC at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. She scored two goals in the match and is now tied for first place in the Golden Boot race with ten goals on the season. The Fresno, Calif. native opened the scoring for her side in the 37th minute, finishing a perfectly placed cross from Courage forward Jessica McDonald to give North Carolina a 1-0 advantage. (Watch highlight) The U.S. international doubled their lead just before halftime pouncing on a loose ball in the box following a dangerous cross from Courage defender Merritt Mathias into the box. She put away the deflection for her second brace of the season. The Pepperdine University product played all 90 minutes and finished with four of 10 shots on goal and two chances created on just 44 touches, according to Opta. It is the third time Williams has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week and the seventh time a member of Courage has won the award. The North Carolina Courage will return to action Friday, Aug. 10 at 8 p.m. ET against Chicago Red Stars at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill.
